Being active is a crucial health issue in our modern office-oriented lives. But often, factors such as a high workload and time-consuming side effects prevent us from keeping a daily exercise routine. Recently, many exergames have been deployed on different home entertainment system to provide an easy access to a daily sport program. However, the long-term effects of such systems and the lack of embodiment are questionable, Therefore, we investage how a physical embodied robot coach can affect people while working out. Research has shown that people tend to perform more goal-oriented when having the support of a coach.
Existing technologies (heart rate monitors, Wii station, etc.) provide feedback about the current performance as well as simple oaching functionalities. However, those systems cannot provide a tailored interaction for the user, adapt to his/her specific needs and learn over time. Recent advances in the area of intelligent systems and humanoid robot systems, however, might pave a way towards a more user-centered and dynamic approach making use of natural means of communication.
Currently, we are continuing our efforts in researching robot assisted workout (PRC). We are exermining the effects of the embodiment and feedback of the robot as well as the personalization of the training using a body weight workout scenario.
